A house, or bhava, is one twelfth of the chart and one department of a life: the body, wealth and speech, courage, home, children, adversity, partnership, upheaval, fortune, work, gains, and loss. In the Parashari school the houses are whole signs, so the sign rising at birth is the entire first house, the next sign the entire second, and no cusp falls inside a sign.
A house is read three ways at once: what sits in it, which graha lords it and where that lord has gone, and what its natural karaka is doing elsewhere. Where the lord has gone is the part most often skipped and the part that changes the reading most, so every house page here sets out its lord in all twelve.
The houses also fall into classical groups that decide how a placement is read: kendra, trikona, dusthana, upachaya, maraka and trishadaya.
