The sixth house covers the friction of ordinary days: the practical part of work, service, obligations and debts, competition, routine and the upkeep of the body. Its natural karaka is Mars; in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Virgo, ruled by Mercury.
By classification it is the odd one out, the only house that appears in three different sets. It is one of the dusthanas, with the eighth and twelfth; one of the upachayas, with the third, tenth and eleventh; and one of the trishadaya group, with the third and eleventh.
That overlap is the interesting fact about this house. The tradition holds it a place of friction and a place of growth at once, and the two are not in conflict: what upachaya says is that capacity here is built by meeting resistance, so an early reading tells little.
It is also why a natural malefic placed in the sixth is read favourably. That does not cancel the dusthana grouping; the two answer different questions. Under the trishadaya doctrine some schools count the sixth lord a functional malefic as well, while others hold that lordship neutral and judge the graha by where it sits.
The sixth lord shows which department carries the chart's obligations and routine: the practical side of work from the tenth, networks from the eleventh. Because one graha here rules a difficult house and a house of increase at once, it resists being labelled benefic or malefic in a word. A related structure, the lord of one difficult house occupying another, is read as a reversal rather than a doubling.
