The third house is the house of effort. Courage, initiative, siblings, short journeys, manual skill and communication in both writing and speech belong to it. Its natural karaka is Mars, and in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Gemini, ruled by Mercury.
It is one of the four upachaya houses, the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh, the houses of increase. The point of that classification is that these houses are not judged by where they start; they are read as improving with applied effort over time.
The third also appears in the trishadaya group, the third, sixth and eleventh. These two sets are not the same kind of thing. Upachaya is about where a graha sits. Trishadaya is about what a lord rules: the doctrine under which some schools treat the lords of the third, sixth and eleventh as functional malefics, while others leave those lordships neutral and judge them by placement.
Conflating the two is the standard error. A natural malefic placed in the third is read favourably, because its intensity is productive in a house of increase. What the trishadaya doctrine says about the third lord is a separate claim about lordship and carries none of that with it.
Where the third lord sits shows where the chart's push is spent. In the ninth it turns effort toward distance and study; in the fourth, toward the household. Siblings and short travel are traced from the same lord, so all of it is read together. A third lord placed far from its own house is not read as effort missing, but as effort committed somewhere else.
