The first house is the lagna itself: whichever sign was rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Every other house is counted from it. It carries the self, the body, vitality and the general cast of the chart. Its natural karaka is the Sun, and in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Aries, ruled by Mars.
Houses here are whole-sign. The entire rising sign is the first house, the whole of the next sign the second, and so on around the wheel. There are no cusps: a graha's house is its sign counted from the lagna sign, whether it stands at one degree of that sign or at twenty-nine.
Bhava Chalit, the cusp-based alternative, divides the wheel by the ascendant degree, so a graha can fall in a different house there. It is a separate chart offered as a labelled option, never written back onto the rashi chart.
By classification the first house is unusual: it is the only one that is both a kendra, an angle, and a trikona, a trine. That is why the lord of the ascendant is read as a functional benefic under every rising sign, and why it escapes the kendradhipati blemish that dulls the other angle lords.
The lagna is a point rather than a body: it moves about a degree every four minutes and a whole sign in roughly two hours. House numbers, house lords and most yogas move with it, so a birth time known only to the hour can put a chart a house out.
Read as a house and not only as a starting point, the first has a lord unlike any other. Wherever the lagna lord sits, that house's business is taken up by the person's own initiative, and because this lord stays a functional benefic under every ascendant, its placement is where a reading conventionally begins.
