The twelfth house is about letting go. Expenditure, giving, seclusion, foreign places, rest, withdrawal and release all fall within it. Its natural karaka is Saturn, and in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Pisces, ruled by Jupiter.
By classification it is a dusthana, grouped with the sixth and eighth, and it belongs to no other set. The term means a difficult place, and what the grouping says is that the affairs of these houses tend to come about through friction rather than directly.

That expense, charity and spiritual retreat share one house is not a contradiction. Each describes something leaving the person's hands; only the destination differs. Foreign places belong here by the same logic, moving away from what is familiar rather than toward something already held.

This is the house that keeps expenditure from meaning only loss, since giving, rest and life abroad are traced from the same lord as spending.
