The fifth house is what issues from a person. Children, intellect, creative work, mantra and the merit carried in from earlier action are all read here. Its natural karaka is Jupiter, and in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Leo, ruled by the Sun.
It is a trikona. The first, fifth and ninth are the three trines, counted the most auspicious houses in the chart, and their lords are treated as functional benefics whatever their natural disposition happens to be.
There is a reason the fifth and ninth are paired in that group. If the ninth is what arrives from the generation before, the fifth is what passes to the generation after. The phrase 'past merit', which attaches to this house in every text, points at that same sequence rather than at a separate idea.
The same logic explains why children, creative output and teaching share one house. Each is something that leaves the person and then stands on its own. Intellect here is not stored information but the sharpness that takes hold of a subject, which is why the faculty and its products are read together.
Half of reading the fifth is asking where its lord went. Children, intellect, mantra and creative output are all traced from that one graha, and the house it occupies is where the sharpness gets used: through the profession from the tenth, through writing from the third. A trine lord is read as benefic wherever it sits, so its arrival is taken as favourable for the house that receives it.
When a single graha rules the fifth and an angle together it becomes a yogakaraka, and the whole vocabulary of raja yoga comes out of that meeting of angle and trine. The fifth is one of the two non-lagna trines that make it possible, so the house cannot be read without asking what else its lord rules.
