The ninth house is the house of guidance. Fortune, dharma, the father, the teacher, higher study, long journeys and belief are read here. Its natural karaka is Jupiter, and in the natural zodiac it corresponds to Sagittarius, which Jupiter also rules.
It is a trikona, one of the first, fifth and ninth. Those three are the dharma trine and are counted the most auspicious houses in a chart; the ninth lord is treated as a functional benefic on that basis alone, whatever graha holds the lordship.
That the ninth and fifth sit in the same trine describes a sequence. The ninth is what arrives from the generation before; the fifth is what passes to the one after. The same idea explains why the father and the teacher share a house: both are figures who went ahead and marked out a way.
Travel and higher learning belong together here for a reason as well. The tradition reads going far and studying deeply as two forms of the same movement beyond what is already familiar. What separates this from the short journeys of the third house is not only distance but purpose.
The ninth lord stays a trine lord wherever it goes, so its presence is taken as support for the house it occupies, and that house shows where a person's orientation becomes visible: in work from the tenth, in teaching from the fifth, at a distance from the twelfth. The father, the teacher and long journeys are traced from this same lord rather than from three separate significators.
The pairing of the ninth lord with the tenth lord has a standing of its own, because it brings a trine and an angle together, and that meeting is the whole basis of the raja yoga vocabulary. Reading the ninth therefore includes asking what else its lord rules.
