Vedic astrology reads nine grahas: the Sun and Moon, the five visible planets from Mars to Saturn, and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The outer planets are not part of the classical set. Graha means "seizer" rather than "planet", which is why the nodes, being points rather than bodies, belong in the list without any strain.
Each graha rules one or two signs, is exalted in one and debilitated in the sign opposite, carries a set of significations, aspects particular houses from wherever it sits, and owns a fixed share of the hundred-and-twenty-year Vimshottari cycle. Rahu and Ketu are the exception at almost every point: no sign of their own, no settled exaltation, and no drishti in the Parashari scheme.
