Mercury is the karaka of intellect. Relatives, speech and intellect are the significations given to it, and it is the natural karaka of the tenth bhava, the house of work and public action.
It lords Gemini and Virgo, and exalts in Virgo, a sign it already owns, deepest at the fifteenth degree: the only graha of the nine whose exaltation sign is also one of its own. Every other exaltation lands a graha in someone else's house: the Sun in Mars's Aries, Saturn in Venus's Libra. Its debilitation is Pisces.
Its moolatrikona is the narrowest of the nine, the sixteenth to the twentieth degree of Virgo, an arc of four degrees where the Moon's runs to twenty-seven. It begins just above the degree of deepest exaltation, so Mercury's two strongest classifications sit back to back in one sign.
Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati are its nakshatras, and each closes a water sign exactly on the boundary: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Those three endings are the near half of the gandanta junctions, the knots where a water sign hands over to a fire sign; Ketu's three nakshatras open the far half.
Seventeen of the hundred and twenty Vimshottari years belong to Mercury, the fourth largest share, behind Venus, Saturn and Rahu, and it closes the nine-lord cycle before it returns to Ketu. Its directional strength is greatest in the first house.
The Sun and Venus are its natural friends and the Moon its enemy. Because the tradition treats it as taking on the character of whatever it sits with, its class is unsettled and it is held here as neutral. It casts the seventh drishti only, and its combustion orb changes when retrograde, which is true of Venus and of no other graha. Commerce, writing, accountancy and communication are its domains.
