Saturn is the karaka of longevity. Longevity, service and discipline are the significations the tradition gives it, and it is the natural karaka of two bhavas: the eighth, of what is hidden and what endures, and the twelfth, of loss and withdrawal.
It lords Capricorn and Aquarius, with the first twenty degrees of Aquarius as its moolatrikona. It exalts in Libra, deepest at the twentieth degree, and falls in Aries, putting its exaltation in a natural friend's sign and its debilitation in a natural enemy's.
Its special drishti falls on the third and the tenth houses, in addition to the seventh that every graha aspects. Those two belong to Saturn alone. Its directional strength is read as greatest in the seventh house, directly opposite the lagna, where Jupiter's and Mercury's is read in the first.
Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada are its nakshatras. All three sit wholly inside their signs and cross no boundary, and the three signs are the water trine: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Saturn's three, like the Moon's, Venus's, Rahu's, Mercury's and Ketu's, sit wholly inside their signs, here the water trine.
Nineteen of the hundred and twenty Vimshottari years are Saturn's, second only to Venus. It is read as the slowest-moving of the seven classical grahas, and the significations built on it, time, delay, endurance, what is arrived at rather than given, all follow from that one observed fact.
Mercury and Venus are its natural friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, Jupiter neutral, and it is classed a natural malefic. For the Taurus and Libra lagnas it becomes a yogakaraka, lording a kendra and a trikona at once. Labour, service, construction and mining are the occupational domains associated with it.
