The Moon is the karaka of the mind. The tradition gives it the mother, the mind and the emotions, and makes it the natural karaka of the fourth bhava: home, comfort, the ground a life stands on.
The whole Vimshottari dasha is read from the Moon. Which nakshatra it occupies at birth, and how far through it the Moon has travelled, fix the first mahadasha and the balance remaining. That nakshatra is the janma nakshatra. No other graha carries such a role in the timing system.
Cancer is its only sign. It exalts in Taurus, deepest at the third degree, and falls in Scorpio. Its moolatrikona runs from that same third degree to the end of Taurus, twenty-seven degrees, by a wide margin the largest of the nine, where Mercury's is four.
Rohini, Hasta and Shravana answer to the Moon. All three sit wholly inside a sign, crossing no boundary, and the three signs are the earth trine: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. A graha whose significations are motion and mood draws the three steadiest seats in the circle.
Ten of the hundred and twenty Vimshottari years are the Moon's. Its directional strength is greatest in the fourth house, which it also signifies, and its occupational domains are the public-facing ones: dealing with people, caregiving, hospitality, travel. The gandanta knots are likewise read chiefly against the Moon and the lagna.
The Sun and Mercury are its natural friends, and it is the only graha of the nine with no natural enemy listed. Whether it is benefic is the one classification the tradition argues about, the common reading making the waxing Moon benefic and the waning Moon not, so it is held here as neutral. It casts the seventh drishti only.
