A nakshatra is one of twenty-seven segments of the sidereal zodiac, each thirteen degrees and twenty minutes wide. They are the lunar mansions: the Moon spends roughly a day in each, and the one it occupies at birth is the single most consequential fact in a Vedic chart after the lagna.
Every nakshatra carries a ruling graha, a presiding deity, a gana, a yoni and four padas, and each pada maps to a different navamsa sign, so the same nakshatra reads differently in its first quarter than in its fourth. The ruling graha is also what starts the Vimshottari dasha, which is why two people born a day apart can run entirely different planetary periods for the next twenty years.
