Ashwini is the first of the twenty-seven nakshatras, occupying the opening thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of Aries. Its presiding deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, twin physicians who ride ahead of the dawn, and its symbol is a horse's head. Ketu lords it.
That combination is what gives the nakshatra its character. Ketu is the graha of sudden arrival and equally sudden departure, and it rules nothing by accumulation. Placed at the very start of the zodiac, under deities associated with healing and with speed, Ashwini is traditionally read through impulse: motion that begins before deliberation has finished.
The horse imagery is not decoration. A horse is quick, willing and difficult to hold once it has decided to move, and the tradition leans on all three. The healing association follows from the same quality rather than contradicting it: the Ashwini Kumaras are emergency physicians in the old stories, arriving fast and acting immediately.
Because Ashwini opens the zodiac it never straddles a rasi boundary. All four padas fall in Aries, but each maps to a different navamsa sign, running from Aries through Taurus and Gemini to Cancer. The same nakshatra therefore reads differently in its first quarter, where the navamsa reinforces the fire, than in its fourth, where Cancer softens it.
In the Vimshottari cycle Ketu carries seven of the hundred and twenty years, among the shortest of the nine and level with Mars; only the Sun's six is smaller. Anyone born with the Moon in Ashwini begins life inside a Ketu mahadasha and holds some portion of those seven years. That is a fact about the nakshatra, not a prediction about a person.
The gana here is deva. Lord, presiding deity and gana are the stable part of the picture: every text and every teacher agrees on them. The cultural layer is not stable in the same way, so the bird and tree associated with Ashwini are set down as things particular schools hold.
